Beginning July 1, 2010, the federal government is adding a 10% tax on the cost
of indoor tanning services, which every salon in America will be forced to collect.
This tax was included as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Health
Care Act recently signed into law by President Obama. Sun Palace and the
Indoor Tanning Association strongly opposed this tax. Lawmakers added it to
the final bill with no input from the industry regarding its impact and failed to give
the industry opportunity for amendment. This tax applies to tanning services
only, and not tanning related products or spray tanning. Customers on monthly
memberships will also see this tax implementation beginning in July.
We regret that we are required to collect this tax, and we want our clients to
understand that this money in no way goes into our pockets, but is passed on
to the federal government. We encourage you to contact your elected officials
with any comments.
